The Benton County School System is proud to announce an exciting new initiative that will benefit all students in Benton County. Starting in January 2024, every student in our school system will receive free meals for the remainder of the 2023-2024 academic year. We believe this program will be a huge success, and we are committed to ensuring that all students have access to healthy and nutritious meals throughout the day. We recognize that many families in our community struggle to make ends meet, and we hope this program will ease some of the financial burdens they face. To make this program a success, we need the support of everyone in the Benton County community. We encourage parents and guardians to talk to their children about the importance of healthy eating and take advantage of the free meals available to them. Regrettably, this program will not take care of any existing lunch debt. In addition to direct payments to the school, please consider using the School Cafe app to help settle any outstanding debt and to manage additional funds to cover extras that will be available for students to purchase once those debts have been settled. We are confident that this initiative will positively impact our students, our schools, and our community as a whole. Thank you for being so supportive, and we look forward to working together to make sure that every student in Benton County has access to the nutrition they need to succeed.

Imagine entering a classroom and seeing third-grade students dressed up as doctors, ready to perform "surgery" on their reading skills. That's precisely what happened in Mrs. Bivens' and Mrs. McDowell's classroom as their students participated in a surgical-themed activity day to review their reading skills. Each student was assigned the role of a doctor and had to visit six "operating rooms," each with a different assigned task. In the first "operating room," students had to find context clues, while in the second "operating room," they had to connect prefixes to root words. In the third, they sorted text features; in the fourth, they built a spinal cord. Next up, in the fifth "operating room," they practiced fluency reading, and finally, in the sixth room, they played the classic game, "Operation." The students were enthusiastic and engaged throughout the day as they worked through each "operating room," using their reading skills to complete each task. The day was a huge success, and all the "doctors" had a great time. It was a unique and exciting way to review their reading skills, and it's safe to say that the students will remember their surgical adventure for a long time to come!
