Subject: State Law Restricts Student Cell Phone Use

Dear Benton County School System Families,

We are writing to make you aware of an important change taking effect this school year regarding student use of personal electronic devices. As of July 1, 2025, a new state law (HB 0932) requires all Tennessee public school districts to limit the use of cell phones and other personal communication devices during instructional time.

In response to this legislation, the Benton County Board of Education has adopted a policy that restricts students from using cell phones, personal laptops and tablets, and smart watches from the beginning of the school day until the final dismissal bell. These devices should be turned off and stored in lockers or backpacks during the school day.

Families who need to reach their child during the day should call their child’s school office. We will ensure messages are delivered in a timely manner.

Please note that exceptions to this policy may be made for students with disabilities or specific learning needs, as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. Additionally, students may be allowed to use their devices in case of emergency or when authorized to do so by a teacher.

We appreciate your partnership in supporting this updated policy, which is designed to reduce distractions and support a focused learning environment. If you have any questions about how this policy will be implemented at your child's school, please contact your school principal.

Thank you for your attention to this important update.

Sincerely,

Mark Florence
